Answer
SLR stands for quotsingle lens reflexquotbrbrSingle lens means that when you compose the shot you are looking through the cameras lens and not a separate viewfinder. Only one piece of glass does the looking single lens.brbrThe quotreflexquot part refers to either a prism or a mirror which allows you to look through an optical viewfinder and see whats going on through the single lens. At the point at which the photo is taken, this prism or mirror quotreflexesquot or flips up out of the way to allow light to reach the filmsensor. As soon as the shot has been taken, it lowers back into place so that you can once again see through the lens.brbrThe Fuji S is a Single lens camera but not a single lens reflex if that makes sense. The LCD or EVF does see through the lens, but nothing reflexes out of the way to take a shot.brbrSo the answer is no, this is not a true SLR camera.brbrHowever I have its predecessor the S and it is a lovely little camera. Even though I have since moved on to Nikon SLRs, I still like this camera, and the shots taken by this camera are indistinguishable from ones taken with my SLRs.brbrDont get me wrong, the SLRs are much better cameras. For example manual focusing under very low light is really not possible with the S whereas with a true SLR, this is relatively easy.brbrIf you want a high quality camera for general shooting for your own private use, then this is a lovely camera. If you ever intend to be professional, then dont waste money on compacts, get an SLR straight away.brbrI hope this helps.brbrJUST TO NOTE The information given earlier by Jonathon is incorrect. My digital SLRs most definitely have mirrors which flip up out of the way. They sound very similar to my film SLR when they take a shot. I know they have the mirrors because I can see them every time I clean the camera. Any Top Contributor who owns a DSLR that may answer this question will back me up here.brbrRegards, teef
